EPISODE 25: Obeying the Rule

EPISODE 25
Obeying the Rule

The Taphouse Grill has been celebrating IPA Week, and naturally I joined in the festivities. On one of my visits I noticed that Dogfish Head Brewery's "120 Minute IPA" was on the beer list. Now I have a rule: Whenever I see the Dogfish 120 on tap, I have to order it. So I did.

Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA

This is the strongest beer that I have tried
The number's on the keg, it must be true:
Eighteen percent! That booze will get you fried!
(I've seen it up as high as twenty-two)

Its taste is worthy to be highly praised
It's potent as a thousand-pound bull moose
You know those grapefruit notes in IPAs?
In this one they taste more like orange juice

I once tried this beer mixed with World Wide Stout
To make a forty-proofer Black and Tan
A combination that will make on shout,
"If you can drink THAT down, then you're da man!"

But whether mixed like that, or on its own
It reigns upon the "Beer, High-Octane" throne

EPISODE 24: Kumbaya Supernova IPA

EPISODE 24
Outer Planet Craft Brewing "Kumbaya Supernova" IPA
(Named from the song by Saint John and the Revelations)

If you're a cowboy roaming outer space
Driving your doggies under distant stars
On moon slit nights in some red-desert place
Monument Valley, say, or Planet Mars

You'll need some ale to drink when you're with friends
Around the campfire, singing "Kumbaya"
A special beer, with cosmic hops, that bends
Spacetime itself, as through a twisty-straw

So start with Extra Special Bitter malt
(A British Accent, just for Doctor Who)
Then add those hops (Northwest types, by default)
Chinook, Cascade, Citra and Simcoe too

And when there's no more beer left in your cup
Cry "Allons-y!" and "Scotty, beam me up!"

EPISODE 23: Old Space Ranger

EPISODE 23
Outer Planet Craft Brewing "Old Space Ranger" Barleywine

Between long treks to planets near and far
From icy dwarfs to giants made of gas
The grizzled starman orders from the bar
"Some Old Space Ranger. In a dirty glass."

The Martian barkeep pours the barleywine
His tentacles wrapped tight around the jug
The spaceman takes a sip, "Ah, that is fine!
Where is it from?" The barkeep gives a shrug

The spaceman gulps, his eyes glaze, neurons fried
His speech slurs, and his brain grows stupider
This beer has hints of something else he's tried
Perhaps a ghost of Ghost of Jupiter?

So if you're thirsty from some grim space battle
Try Old Space Ranger, on tap in Seattle!

EPISODE 22: "Downtown Funk" Gose

EPISODE 22
"Downtown Funk" Gose, Brewed by Josh Dalton for Rock Bottom

There's always something going on downtown
Excitement's in the air – or is that yeast?
If some is cultured after it drifts down
A purpose is soon found for the wee beast

It works its alchemy upon the ale
With some assist from Kolsch yeast, to be sure
With such a combo, how could this beer fail?
It is a recipe that can endure

At first the taste is lemony and tart
But given time it mellows out, so smooth
The malt and hops join in to play their part
And in the end its guaranteed to sooth

So if you like your ales made from wheat
This crisp refreshing gose can't be beat
